Vaginas naturally come in all shapes and sizes, and they can change over time due to aging, childbirth, menopause, or certain medical conditions. Changes to the vaginal tissue and surrounding areas can leave women feeling self-conscious about their appearance, especially during moments of intimacy. Having a large labia, loose vaginal opening, or decreased sensation can interfere with comfort and sexual pleasure.

Vaginal rejuvenation and labiaplasty can address these issues and empower women to feel more confident. Dr. Kimberly Evans takes the time to understand each woman’s concerns and goals to create an effective treatment plan. While there are similarities between these treatment options, there are also some key differences.

What is Vaginal Rejuvenation?

Vaginal rejuvenation is an umbrella term that encompasses multiple procedures such as labiaplasty, vaginoplasty, perineoplasty, and non-surgical treatments. It can address aesthetic and functional concerns while enhancing comfort, appearance, and sexual sensation during your most intimate moments.

  • Labiaplasty is used to resize and reshape the labia minora to not extend as far beyond the labia majora. This can reduce chafing and smooth the appearance of the genital area when wearing form-fitting clothing.
  • Vaginoplasty tightens the opening of the vagina to reduce gaping and unwanted noise while creating more pleasurable friction during intercourse.
  • Perineoplasty corrects tissue damage between the vagina and anus, which may occur during childbirth or physical trauma.

These procedures can be performed separately or together.

Vaginal rejuvenation does not always have to be surgical. It can also include non-surgical options such as:

  • Ultra Femme 360™: Radiofrequency energy is focused on the vagina and outer labia to tighten muscles and stimulate blood flow and lubrication.
  • BTL Emsella®: Electromagnetic waves stimulate and strengthen the pelvic floor muscles and improve urinary incontinence.
  • O-Shot®: An injectable used to elevate sexual sensation and response, enhance the ability to reach orgasm, increase natural lubrication, and reduce urinary incontinence.

How Long is Recovery from Vaginal Rejuvenation?

Recovery will depend on which procedures were performed and how you recover. If you only received non-surgical treatment, downtime is minimal, and you can often return to your normal activities the next day. If you had surgery, recovery may take six to eight weeks, but you can often return to work after two to three weeks. You may notice a more youthful-looking vagina almost immediately, but it can take several months for swelling to fully resolve and the final results to appear.

What Is Labiaplasty?

Unlike vaginal rejuvenation, which focuses on the entire genital area, labiaplasty is a single surgical procedure focused on improving the appearance of the labia. When you look at your vagina, you can often see the lips of the labia minora hanging down. Some women are born with a larger labium, and others find that their labia have become enlarged following childbirth or menopause.

This can not only cause you to feel more self-conscious, but the labia may create discomfort during everyday activities like exercising or sexual intercourse. It may also leave an unwanted bulge when wearing form-fitting clothing such as underwear, a bathing suit, or yoga pants.

By removing excess tissue, the area is reshaped to create a symmetrical appearance and make the inner part of the labia even with the outer part. This can keep the labia from being pushed into the vagina during sexual intercourse or becoming caught during physical activity, as well as create a smoother appearance when wearing certain clothing.

How Long is Recovery from Labiaplasty?

You will want to take it easy and rest for two to four weeks after surgery, especially if you have a physically demanding job. Within six to eight weeks, many women can resume all normal activity, including sexual relations. Any residual swelling should resolve within six months, allowing you to see the final results of your labiaplasty. Since the labia have natural wrinkles and folds, this minimizes the appearance of any scarring.
