Large fibroids in the uterus can be an uncomfortable and debilitating medical issue, but you don’t have to suffer in silence. Dr. Evans at Sugar Land Medical Spa in Houston offers diagnostic procedures that will help determine if you need an abdominal myomectomy.

This procedure may be what you need to start feeling more comfortable and confident in your own body. Don’t hesitate to take control of your health today!

What Is an Abdominal Myomectomy?

Large fibroids can cause heavy bleeding, pain and pressure in the lower abdomen. Left untreated, it can enlarge and lead to further medical problems. An abdominal myomectomy is an open surgical procedure that involves opening the abdomen to remove these fibroids from the uterus. As opposed to a hysterectomy, patients keep their uterus intact.

During an abdominal myomectomy, Dr. Evans will make an incision, usually along the lower abdomen, just above the pubic bone. This type of incision is often called a “bikini cut.” She will remove the fibroids from the uterine wall, and the uterine muscle is then sewn together with multiple layers of stitches.

Recovery & Aftercare

After an abdominal myomectomy, you will need to care for the incision along your abdomen for about 4-6 weeks. During this time, you will also need to avoid strenuous activity. However, it is essential to maintain gentle movement while you recover, such as by walking daily.

Since abdominal myomectomy involves open surgery, there is a more extensive recovery process than a vaginal myomectomy. Patients are usually in the hospital for 1-2 days.  With a vaginal myomectomy, there is a shorter recovery time, with no incisions, and patients usually go home the same day.
