Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes and resizes the labia minora, or inner vaginal lips. This procedure addresses excess tissue that can result from genetics or stretching due to childbirth or significant weight loss. At Sugar Land Medical Spa in the Greater Houston area, we understand that these changes can affect both form and function, and we are here to provide solutions.

In this ultimate labiaplasty guide, we will explain the procedure and offer insights into each phase—from selecting a qualified specialist to understanding what to expect during recovery and the final results. Our goal is to provide you with the knowledge and support you need to make an informed decision.

Why Consider Labiaplasty?

You might consider labiaplasty if your labia minora droops, is elongated, or causes pain or discomfort.

The procedure can provide relief from:

  • Embarrassment or self-consciousness
  • Frequent urinary tract infections
  • Itching and irritation
  • Pain from twisting, turning, and tugging labia
  • Pain when riding a bike, motorcycle, or horse
  • Painful or uncomfortable intercourse
  • Personal hygiene issues

How To Prepare for Labiaplasty

Preparing for your labiaplasty procedure involves taking care of your health and ensuring you have what you need at home for a comfortable recovery.

Here are some tasks to add to your to-do list:

  • Anticipate the expense – It’s important to note that most insurance companies do not provide benefits for labiaplasty procedures, and they are considered cosmetic. However, we have options available to make it affordable.

  • Arrange for transportation – Please arrange for a responsible adult to drive you to your surgery appointment, stay at the facility during your procedure, and take you home. This person may also need to stay with you overnight and drive you to your first follow-up appointment.

  • Take time off – Plan to rest after surgery by scheduling at least seven to ten days off from work, school, and other commitments.

  • Eat healthy – Nutritious food will support your body for surgery, reduce inflammation, and aid in recovery.

  • Stay hydrated – Drinking plenty of water promotes wound healing, improves blood circulation, and supports a smoother recovery.

  • Get plenty of sleep and rest – Adequate rest before surgery can help your mind and body relax.

  • Get a pap smear – Dr. Evans may request a recent pap smear to assess your cervical health.

  • Stop smoking – Quitting smoking is crucial, as it can impair blood flow and weaken your immune system, which are essential for healing.

  • Get groceries and prescriptions – Stock up on healthy groceries and pick up any prescribed pain relievers or antibiotics.

  • Ask for help around the house – Arrange for assistance with childcare, pets, or household tasks, as you will need to avoid lifting or strenuous activity.

Stop taking certain medications and supplements – Your doctor will provide specific instructions on which medications and supplements to stop taking before surgery to minimize bleeding risks.

What To Expect During Labiaplasty Surgery

Understanding what to expect during labiaplasty can help alleviate anxiety and prepare you for the recovery process. At Sugar Land Medical Spa, we believe that informed patients experience a smoother recovery.

How Long Is a Labiaplasty Procedure?

A labiaplasty procedure typically takes one to two hours, but the exact duration can vary. Your doctor will provide a personalized time estimate for your surgery.

Will I Need to Stay Overnight?

Labiaplasty is usually performed as an outpatient procedure, meaning you will not need to stay overnight.

Does Labiaplasty Hurt?

Your comfort is a priority. Anesthesia and pain medication will be administered to ensure you do not feel pain during the procedure and to manage any discomfort during recovery.

What Happens During a Labiaplasty?

During a labiaplasty, Dr. Evans will reshape and resize the labia minora. There can be different techniques for the labiaplasty but Dr Evans prefers the Trim procedure for a smoother and more natural post operative appearance.

  • Trim Procedure

    • Dr. Evans will trim and remove excess tissue from the outer edge of the labia minora.
    • The edge will be recontoured.
    • The tissue will be stitched to create symmetry with the labia majora (outer vaginal lips).
    • Immediately After Your Labiaplasty

Immediately following your labiaplasty:

  • You will be taken to a recovery area for monitoring.
  • Once stable, you will be released to go home with post-operative care instructions.

What Are the Risks of Labiaplasty?

As with any surgical procedure, labiaplasty carries certain risks, including bleeding and infection. Additional risks associated with labial reduction include:

  • Chronic dryness
  • Scarring near the vaginal opening
  • Painful intercourse
  • Change in sensitivity of the labia
  • Removal of too much or too little labial tissue
  • Healing asymmetrically

At Sugar Land Medical Spa, Dr. Evans prioritizes your safety and well-being, employing techniques to minimize these risks and promote optimal outcomes. In addition, this is why Dr. Evans prioritizes the consultation and pre-op appointment to ensure full understanding of these risks. She strives to understand your desired result and ensure your expectations are met. And to prepare you for proper healing during the post op recovery

Labiaplasty Recovery

Your labiaplasty recovery will typically span six weeks. Here’s what you can generally expect:

First Week After Labiaplasty

The first week following labiaplasty tends to involve the most intense post-operative symptoms.

  • Discomfort – Expect significant swelling in the labia minora and majora for the first two to three days, peaking within a few days. Elevating your buttocks and using cold compresses as directed can help reduce swelling. Manage discomfort with prescribed medication as directed.

  • Bandages and Ointments – Follow your doctor’s instructions for wearing bandages and for applying any prescribed ointments.

  • Hygiene – Avoid showering for the first 24 hours. Clean the vaginal area by spraying it gently and patting it dry. Avoid using tampons during recovery.

  • Clothing – Wear loose-fitting clothing and undergarments to avoid irritating the surgical site.

  • Activity – Rest for the first few days, avoiding household tasks, driving, and exercise. Gentle walking is encouraged to promote circulation and prevent blood clots. Use a cane or ask for assistance to prevent falls.

Two to Six Weeks After Labiaplasty

During the following two to six weeks, your symptoms should gradually decrease. If they worsen or do not improve, contact our practice.

  • Discomfort – Swelling and itching should subside, and you will likely need less pain medication.
  • Bandages and Ointments  – Continue using bandages and applying ointment to incisions as needed. Keep the surgical site clean and monitor incision healing.
  • Hygiene – You can resume brief showers, but avoid scrubbing the vaginal area and continue to pat it dry. Refrain from using tampons.
  • Massaging the area– Dr Evans recommends waiting until after your 2 week post op check to get cleared for this therapy.  This involves gently massaging the area to help promote healing and decrease scar formation.
  • Activity – Avoid sexual intercourse until cleared by your doctor. Continue daily walking, but avoid overexertion. Non-strenuous activity may be resumed within four weeks, but wait for approval before engaging in more strenuous exercise like jogging, running, or riding a bike, motorcycle, or horse.

When Will You See the Results of Labiaplasty?

While individual experiences vary, labiaplasty results typically become more apparent in the weeks and months following surgery as swelling decreases and scars fade.

What Will Your Scars Look Like?

Labiaplasty scars are generally minimally visible due to several factors:

  • Dr. Evans will use dissolvable stitches, which create less tension and result in finer scars.
  • Scars tend to blend with the natural wrinkles and folds of the labia minora.
  • While initially firm, scar tissue softens over several months.

Will Insurance Cover Labiaplasty?

Typically, health insurance does not cover labiaplasty, as it is considered a cosmetic procedure. Please contact the office for customized pricing and finance options.

How Much Does Labiaplasty Cost?

The cost of labiaplasty can vary, generally ranging from $3,000 to $6,000 or higher. This estimate includes:

  • Anesthesia fees
  • Facility fees
  • Doctor’s fees
  • Pre- and post-operative care

The team at Sugar Land Med Spa will provide a detailed cost estimate during your consultation, as well as discuss finance options as needed.
